JEE Advanced 2024 Updates: Check last five year cut offs

"It took me time to adjust to the food, climate and everything in the beginning. However, as I made new friends and joined some clubs and societies in my first semester, things changed rapidly. I learnt how to adapt to the new environment and now IIT Mandi feels like home. I accepted this transition from my hometown Bhopal to IIT Mandi to be a motivating factor for this new journey. My day generally starts in the morning with classes from 8 am to 2 pm. After that, our labs start and then in the evening, competitions and workshops are held." said Piyush Roy. 

Unlike, BTech, where students are required to mandatorily enroll in clubs and societies, we have the option to join any as per our likes and commitments.

In the first semester, I did not join any clubs or society. I was exploring the things at IIT Guwahati and wanted to see what would fit me best. In my second semester now, I have joined the debate club. I even participated in the inter-hostel debate which we had in the institute. I was part of the team which bagged the second place among the 13 hostels that we have.

Candidates can download answer key from the official website — jeeadv.ac.in. Students will be able to raise objections till June 3.

For 2024, the cut-off for general candidates and general EWS students is 378, while for OBC NCL the cut-off marks are 383, SC 364, and ST 366. The cut-off has seen a significant rise from last year with 348 marks for general and EWS candidates and 352 for OBC NCL, 331 for SC and 323 for ST.

As there is time for these events to happen, let’s analyse the cut-off for JEE Advanced 2024 academic sessions in the last five years and observe how students can expect the 2024 cut-off to be.

The average salary offered to IIT Bombay students has been continuously increasing for the past few years. The average salary of the 2017 placement season was 11.41 lakh per annnum (approx), which then increased to Rs 18.5 lakh per annnum (approx) in 2018 and then to Rs 10.34 lakh per annnum (approx) in 2019. While there was a slight dip to Rs 18.40 lakh per annnum (approx) in 2020, which could have been a result of the Covid pandemic, IIT Bombay picked up the pace again and touched Rs 22.7 lakh per annnum (approx) in 2021.

The qualifying JEE-Main score for general category candidates who appeared in the JEE-Advanced was 88.4, slightly higher than in 2021 when it was 87.9. However, for the reserved category candidates, the cut-offs were at a four-year low at 43.08 for SCs and 26.7 for STs, according to IIT Bombay, which organised the entrance.

In 2019, the qualifying cut-off marks for JEE Advanced were even higher at 10 per cent in each subject and 25 per cent overall. The dip in cut-offs in a given year was usually attributed to tougher question papers.

The 2022 pass percentage stood at 26.17 per cent, compared to 29.54 per cent in 2021. The qualifying marks were also lowered as compared to 2021 to get a pool of qualified candidates at least twice the number of total seats on offer. The aggregate percentile for general, EWS and OBC was 13.89 per cent while it was 7.78 per cent for the SC and ST categories.

In 2023, the qualifying cut-off for the common rank list (CRL) was 23.89 per cent, a significant jump from last year’s CRL cut-off of 15.28 per cent — which was also the lowest since 2012. Similarly, all the other categories for JEE Advanced saw an increase in cut-offs compared to the previous year.

There are various factors including the number of students who appeared for the exam, the number of students who registered, exam difficulty level, and previous year cut-off trends. Every year, the IIT releases different cut-offs for different categories of students like general, EWS, SC, ST, and OBC.

The question paper included questions from physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The provisional answer key of JEE Advanced 2024 will be released on June 2. 

Candidates can download answer key from the official website — jeeadv.ac.in and will be able to raise objections till June 3.

The provisional answer keys for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be displayed on the JEE (Advanced) 2024 online portal. After the display of provisional answer keys, the candidates may submit their feedback, if any, on the candidate portal.

The JEE Advanced 2024 examination maintained its standard of testing students' thorough understanding of concepts, problem-solving abilities, and time management skills. Students who balanced their preparation across all three subjects are likely to perform well. As students await the official results, it is important to stay calm and prepare for the next steps in their academic journey.

In Physics, many questions came from the magnetic effect of current, mechanics, and thermodynamics.
In Chemistry, questions came from biomolecules and organic chemistry.

The level of JEE Advanced 2024 was similar to last year. The overall paper was moderate with questions being doable.

Topics Covered: The paper had an even distribution of questions from Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. In Organic Chemistry, questions mostly came from Amines, Polymers, Biomolecules, and Oxygen-containing Compounds, with some named reactions.
Type of Questions: Mostly theoretical with some application-based questions. Inorganic Chemistry had a few questions directly from NCERT. 
Student Feedback: Students generally found this section to be the easiest, with clear and direct questions. Organic chemistry was a bit tough with mixed concepts questions.

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult

Type of Questions: A combination of conceptual and numerical questions, with a few requiring deep understanding and application of principles.

Student Feedback: While some questions were straightforward, others were tricky, testing the fundamental understanding of concepts. Overall, Physics was reported as tough compared to the other two subjects.

The overall difficulty level of JEE Advanced 2024 was moderate. Compared to previous years, this year's paper was similar to JEE Advanced 2023 in terms of difficulty, which benefited students as they were already habitual to this level of examination.

With the conclusion of JEE Advanced Paper -2, the difficulty level was similar to the morning shift. As per the reaction of the students Physics was the toughest even in the second shift. 

In Chemistry, questions were asked from Thermodynamics, Kinetics, Metallurgy. The questions from Organic Chemistry were very direct.

At the same time, Mathematics ranged from lengthy to moderate with questions coming from Integral, Trigonometry, vector and 3D.

Physics on the other hand was the toughest among the two with maximum questions being asked from Kinematics and Electromagnetism. Among all the topics, questions from Modern Physics were the toughest in the section.

Students found the overall level of paper Moderately Tough; tougher than Paper-1.

Mathematics was toughest as per students. There were questions from Functions, Limits, Application of Derivatives, Definite Integrals, Area under Curve, Inverse Trigonometric functions, Vectors, 3D Geometry, Circle, Parabola, Quadratic Equations, Permutation & Combination and Probability. Students felt this section was the toughest.

In paper 2 of JEE Advanced 2024, Physics was the toughest among the two with maximum questions being asked from Kinematics and Electromagnetism. Among all the topics, question from Modern Physics were the toughest in the section, says Nitin Viijay, Founder & CEO of Motion Education.

The JEE Advanced 2024 has now concluded with the end of paper 2, which concluded at 5:30 pm.

The JEE Advanced 2024 response sheets and provisional answer keys will be released at the official website a few days after the exam concludes today.

According to students', the difficulty level of the paper was moderate to difficult. Mathematics and Chemistry were particularly challenging, while Physics was of moderate difficulty. As per Ajay Kumar Sharma, national academic director, Engineering Aakash Educational Services Limited:

The provisional answer keys for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be displayed on the JEE (Advanced) 2024 online portal. After the display of provisional answer keys, the candidates may submit their feedback, if any, on the candidate portal.

Step 3: Enter the required credentials to login.

Step 4: Once successfully logged in, candidates will be able to check their score card.

Paper 2 commenced at 2:30 and will conclude at 5:30 pm.

The JEE Advanced 2024 paper 2 exam has started at 2:30 pm, and will conclude at 5:30 pm.

The responses of the candidates who have appeared for BOTH Paper 1 and Paper 2, recorded during the examination, will be available for viewing, downloading and printing from the JEE (Advanced) 2024 candidate portal.

Mathematics was Easy to Moderate as per students. There were questions from Functions, Limits, Definite Integrals, Matrices, Statistics & Probability. Some good questions were asked from chapters of Permutation & Combination, Probability, Complex Numbers, 3-D Geometry, Circles and Ellipse. Some questions were reported Lengthy.

Chemistry was a not balanced as more weightagage was given to Organic Chemistry.

Inorganic Chemistry had few questions which were directly from NCERT. In Physical Chemistry questions covered chapters of Chemical Kinetics, Chemical Equilibrium, Atomic Structure & Thermodynamics.

In Organic Chemistry, questions mostly asked from Amines, Polymers, Biomolecules, Oxygen containing Compounds, some named reactions were also asked. Mixed concepts questions were asked. This section was reported moderate as per students.

Students have reported Maths was Easy to Moderate, Chemistry was Moderate, but Physics was relatively difficult. 

The JEE Advanced 2024 result will be declared at 5 pm on June 14.

Appearing in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 is compulsory. Therefore, the responses of ONLY those candidates who have appeared for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be evaluated/graded.

The start of Joint Seat Allocation (JoSAA) 2024 process will begin at 5 pm on June 10

Candidates are advised NOT to wear charm/taweez, items containing metals such as ring, bracelet, earrings, nose pin, chain/necklace, pendant, badge, brooch, clothes with big buttons. They are also advised to wear open footwear like chappals and sandals.

The JEE Advanced 2024 paper 1 has concluded for all students. Now, paper 2 will begin from 2:30 pm and conclude at 5:30 pm

Online display of provisional answer keys will be done at 10 am on June 2.

The paper 1 of JEE Advanced is about to end soon at 12 pm. Check paper-wise timings:

Paper 1: 9 am to 12 pm
Paper 2: 2:30 to 5:30 pm

The on-screen computer clock counter of every candidate will be set at the server. The countdown timer on the top right side of computer screen will display the time remaining (in minutes) available for the candidate to complete the examination. When the timer reaches zero, the examination will end by itself. Candidate will not be required to end or submit the examination. 

In case the computer/mouse allotted to any candidate malfunctions at any time during the test, the candidate will be immediately allotted another computer system and the time lost due to this will be automatically adjusted in the server so as to give the candidate the full allotted time of 3 hours (180 minutes).

The keyboard attached to the computer, if any, will be disabled during the entire duration of the examination. Depending on the type of question, the answers to questions can either be entered by clicking on the virtual on-screen keyboard (numeric or otherwise) using the computer mouse or by clicking on the chosen option(s) using the computer mouse. Candidates will have the option to change/modify answers already entered any time during the entire duration of the examination. 

The question papers will be in both English and Hindi languages. The candidates will have the option to choose (and also switch between) the preferred language anytime during the examination. English version will prevail in the event of any difference of opinion.

In the event that a question(s) needs to be dropped, full marks for that question(s) will be awarded to all candidates

JEE (Advanced) 2024 will consist of two question papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2 of three hours duration each. Appearing for both the papers is compulsory

PwD candidates having disabilities with at least 40% impairment as applicable, are eligible for one hour compensatory time for each paper (i.e. for these candidates the end time will be 13:00 IST for Paper 1 and 18:30 IST for Paper 2).
