The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Delhi are two of India’s most prestigious engineering institutions, especially recognised for their Computer Science Engineering (CSE) programmes. With fierce competition between these two giants, it’s crucial to evaluate which one offers better placement opportunities for its students.
IIT Delhi, established in 1961, and IIT Bombay, established in 1958, are both iconic institutions in India. Despite being younger, IIT Delhi holds the second position, while IIT Bombay ranks third, according to the NIRF 2024 engineering rankings. This close ranking underscores the significance of comparing these institutions, particularly for prospective students. Let’s delve into the data to see how they stack up.
Over the years, both IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi have shown impressive placement records, but a closer look reveals distinct trends. In the 2022-23 placement season, the average CTC for IIT Bombay graduates was Rs 21.82 lakh per annum, a slight increase from Rs 21.50 lakh per annum in the previous year and Rs 17.91 lakh per annum in 2020-21.
This steady rise reflects the strong demand for IIT Bombay graduates. In comparison, IIT Delhi consistently offered higher average salaries, with the 2022-23 average CTC at Rs 25.82 lakh per annum, up from Rs 24.45 lakh per annum in 2021-22 and Rs 22.69 lakh per annum in 2020-21. This trend underscores IIT Delhi’s ability to secure higher-paying jobs for its students.
When it comes to the highest salary packages, IIT Bombay leads the way. In the 2022-23 placement season, IIT Bombay recorded the highest international package at a staggering Rs 3.67 crore per annum, with the highest domestic package reaching Rs 1.68 crore per annum. This continues a trend of high-value placements, with previous years also seeing significant top offers of Rs 2.1 crore per annum in 2021-22 and Rs 1.4 crore per annum in 2020-21.
In contrast, the highest package offered at IIT Delhi in 2022-23 was Rs 41.13 lakh per annum, which, while substantial, does not reach the heights seen at IIT Bombay. However, IIT Delhi has shown a consistent increase in its highest packages over the years, moving from Rs 33 lakh per annum in 2020-21 to Rs 36.7 lakh per annum in 2021-22.
In terms of placement participation and success rates, IIT Bombay had 2174 students registered for placements in 2022-23, with 1845 actively participating and 1516 securing jobs, leading to a placement rate of 82 per cent. This marks an improvement from the previous years, where the placement rates were 80 per cent in 2021-22 and 76 per cent in 2020-21.
Meanwhile, IIT Delhi’s placement performance remains exceptional, particularly in its MBA programme, where a 100 per cent placement rate was achieved in 2022-23, with an average salary of Rs 25.82 lakh per annum. This high placement rate has been a consistent feature at IIT Delhi, as seen in the previous years.
While both IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi excel in placing their CSE graduates in prestigious roles, each institution has its strengths. IIT Bombay stands out with its higher top salary packages and significant international offers, making it an attractive choice for students aiming for the highest compensation. On the other hand, IIT Delhi’s consistently higher average salaries highlight its ability to secure strong offers across the board, making it equally competitive and appealing to top recruiters.
