IIT-Kanpur to use Olympiad scores for admission to BTech-BS programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) will admit students to BTech and BS programmes through Olympiads. The admission through Olympiads in BTech-BS programmes at IIT Kanpur will be made in five departments from the 2025-26 academic year.

Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Economic and Mathematics and Statistics departments will admit candidates through Olympiads.

The selection process, according to an IIT Kanpur statement involves two stages. Initially, each department will review applicants based on their Olympiad rankings and shortlist candidates accordingly. These candidates will then participate in a written examination, which is mandatory, and an interview, if required.

At the Institute level, a selection committee, led by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will consolidate the recommendations from each department to ensure that the admissions process is streamlined, filling all available seats within each department without overlap.

Admission to biological sciences and bioengineering department will be based on Olympiads in biology, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Admission to Computer Science and Engineering department will be made through Olympiads in mathematics and informatics. Admission to the Chemistry department will be based on Olympiad in Chemistry and admission to economic sciences and mathematics and statistics will be based on the Olympiad in mathematics.

IIT Kanpur admission through Olympiad: Common eligibility criteria

1. The prescribed age limit of the candidate should be the same as that of the JEE Advanced candidates for the corresponding year

2. The candidate should have appeared for the Class 12 or equivalent examination for the first time in either the year of admission to IIT Kanpur or the previous year with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects

3. The candidate should have scored first class marks in the qualifying examination

4. The candidate should not have been admitted to an IIT through JoSAA in the previous year, irrespective of whether or not the candidate continued in the program or accepted a seat at IIT by reporting online or physically at the reporting centre in the past

5. The candidate whose admission to IITs was cancelled for whatever reason after joining any IIT are NOT eligible to get admission through Olympiads

6. The candidate should have attended the International Olympic Training camp in the discipline specified by the concerned department

The participating departments will use the rank list of the relevant Olympiad to shortlist the candidates and conduct a written examination (mandatory) and interview (optional) for these shortlisted candidates to finalise the programme’s selected candidates.

The participating departments will advertise the call for applications for admission through Olympiads in the first week of March for the admissions to be made in July of the respective academic year. The window to submit the applications will close by the fourth week of March. The final opening and closing dates to send out the admission offers will be announced after the date of JoSAA counselling is ascertained.
