IIT Kanpur invites applications for summer internships

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has opened the application window to register for the undergraduate summer research internship from March 18. Students pursuing a bachelor’s or masters degree in India will be eligible to apply for the internship. The official website to apply for the internship is surge.iitk.ac.in

The duration of the programme is approximately eight weeks. The IIT Kanpur internship programme will tentatively start on May 10 and conclude on July 12. The application link will remain active till March 28.

IIT Kanpur internship details

As per the details provided on the official website, the shortlisting of the candidates will be done in the second week of April and the result will be announced in the last week of April. The IIT Kanpur internship programme is part of Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) programme. The objective of the SURGE programme is to develop the agenda of undergraduate research and promote the culture of research and interdisciplinary education among the new generation.

The registration charges (payable at the time of registration) will not be applicable for IIT Kanpur students and non-IIT Kanpur students have to pay Rs 750 (non refundable). The administrative charge which will have to be paid after the announcement of the list of the selected participants for IITK students is Rs 3,000 and for non-IITK students, it is Rs 4,000. During the entire stay of the internship at IIT Kanpur campus, boarding and lodging expenses will be borne by the concerned participants.

The eligibility criteria for SAARC countries students, non-IITK Indian students and IIT Kanpur students are different.

Eligibility criteria for IIT-K students

Under this programme, IITK students with CPI >= 5.5 are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. In order to complete the application, it is necessary for the student to identify an IITK Faculty who is willing to be his/her mentor during the summer internship, and a suitable project to pursue for the 08 weeks in summer. The eligibility criteria for IITK students at the time of starting of internship are:

 (i) B.Tech/BS (2nd,3rd year completed),

(ii) Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd, 4th year),

(iii) M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year)

Eligibility criteria for Non IITK students

Under this program, Non-IITK Indian students with CPI >= 6 are eligible to apply for summer internship at IIT Kanpur.The eligibility criteria for Non-IITK students at the time of starting of internship are mentioned below:

(i) B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),

(ii) Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)

(iii) B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)

(iv) M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)

Eligibility criteria for SAARC Countries

The SURGE program is opened to UG students from SAARC countries (NEPAL & BHUTAN). Under this category, a maximum of 04 students from SAARC countries are allowed to participate in the SURGE program for the upcoming summer of 2024 internship. The students selected under this category are eligible for a scholarship of Rs. 12,500/-. Administrative charges and travel expenses (upto Rs. 10,000/- (maximum) or as per actual) are also reimbursed. The details will be available from February 6, 2024 (tentatively).

IIT Kanpur participants are not permitted to undertake summer course and SURGE 2024 project simultaneously. However, an exception for those participants whose CPI is >=8.5 is permitted to undertake one summer course along with one SURGE-2024 project.
