Sense of belonging makes women over 6 times more likely to call workplace ‘great’: Report

Despite progress in increasing women's representation across industries, participation has stagnated at 26 per cent in 2024, following a steady rise from 2021 to 2023. The report highlights the need for further efforts to bridge the gender gap, especially in male-dominated sectors such as technology, manufacturing, and transportation.

Women who feel a strong sense of belonging are 6.2 times more likely to describe their workplace as “great” and 3.1 times more likely to perceive growth opportunities, underscoring the importance of inclusive work environments, according to recent report released by the Great Place to Work. The 2024 report on India’s Best Workplaces for Women emphasised the role a sense of belonging plays in women’s workplace success.

Despite progress in increasing women’s representation across industries, participation has stagnated at 26 per cent in 2024, following a steady rise from 2021 to 2023. The report highlights the need for further efforts to bridge the gender gap, especially in male-dominated sectors such as technology, manufacturing, and transportation. However, industries such as education, non-profits, and charity organisations have achieved nearly 50 per cent female representation, emerging as leaders in gender inclusion.

One critical finding of the report is the role leadership plays in advancing gender equality. While there remains an 11 per cent gap between women in mid-level management and CEO positions, companies that invest in leadership development programmes specifically for women are making headway. Mentorship and sponsorship initiatives are helping women gain confidence and move forward in their careers.

The report also reveals a disparity in perceptions of fair compensation and recognition between women and men. While women make up a substantial part of the workforce, only 65 per cent feel they are receiving an equitable share of company profits, signaling a need for organisations to prioritise transparency and fairness.

This year’s report serves as a call to action, emphasising the need to close representation gaps, ensure fairness, and create workplaces where all individuals can thrive.
