The Bareilly district administration on Wednesday ordered the closure of all schools up to Class 8 for three days as a cold wave and dense fog continued to disrupt normal life in the region. Officials said that all government, aided and private schools for Classes 1 to 8 will remain shut from December 18 to December 20 in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

Basic Shiksha Adhikari Dr Vinita said the decision was taken on the directions of District Magistrate Avinash Singh. She cautioned that strict action would be initiated against any school found violating the order. However, she clarified that schools where examinations have already been scheduled may conduct them as per the pre-decided programme.

The decision in Bareilly comes amid similar weather-related measures in the national capital earlier this week.

On Monday, the Delhi government directed schools to shift classes up to Grade 5 to the online mode in response to adverse weather conditions. The Delhi High Court also advised advocates and parties-in-person to appear through videoconferencing before it and the district courts, citing the prevailing weather.

Later in the week, the Delhi government further tightened curbs to address deteriorating conditions, announcing that no non-BS VI private vehicle registered outside Delhi will be allowed to enter the capital from Thursday. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said vehicles violating the entry ban would be seized.

He also stated that from Thursday, December 18 onwards, vehicles without a valid pollution under control certificate will not be provided fuel at petrol pumps in the city.

Meanwhile, Bareilly and adjoining areas remained under a dense blanket of fog. Cold winds intensified the chill, while poor visibility during morning hours slowed traffic movement and increased the risk of accidents. Tuesday was recorded as the coldest day in the district in the last 10 years, with the maximum temperature dropping to 16.3 degrees Celsius.

Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Santosh Kumar Singh said the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for dense fog for the next three days. He added that cold winds from the hills are likely to further aggravate the situation. The administration has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and take special care of children and the elderly, as there is no immediate relief expected from the cold spell.
