PSEB result: Punjab Class X students got 25 ‘grace marks’

The pass percentage in the Class X PSEB exam was a little over 72 per cent, nearly four per cent higher than last year.

THE PUNJAB School Education Board (PSEB) gave as many as 25 grace marks to students who wrote the Class X examinations this year, which could have helped to boost the overall pass percentage.

The pass percentage in the Class X PSEB exam was a little over 72 per cent, nearly four per cent higher than last year.

Official sources said this year, as per rules, every student got seven grace marks, that is one per cent of the total 650 marks. In addition, students who wrote the English and social sciences examinations were given four ‘ad hoc’ marks in both subjects. Then, 10 more marks were given to all students who wrote the exam as ‘general grace marks.’

When contacted, PSEB chairperson Dr Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal did not deny that grace marks were given. Without commenting on the specifics of all 25 grace marks, she told The Indian Express that ‘ad hoc marks’ were given when questions are ‘out of syllabus’ or on the recommendation of the evaluator.

“We have given the marks not to improve the results but as the right of the students,” Dhaliwal said. She said evaluators had recommended four extra marks for students writing the English exam and another four for social sciences.

Punjab Education Minister Daljeet Singh Cheema, who is travelling in Odisha, was unreachable for comment.
