Even as they underwent a huge personal tragedy, the parents of a newborn, who was declared brain dead at a Surat hospital, decided to look beyond their own grief. Harshad Sanghani and his wife Chetna donated the organs of their boy, who was taken off the ventilator on Wednesday, and gave a new lease of life to six children.
The parents decided to donate his eyes, kidneys, spleen, and liver, said officials. The organ donation was carried out by Surat-based Jeevan Organ Donation Foundation

Recalling the ordeal, Harshad Sanghani told The Indian Express, “After he was delivered, my son did not cry and showed no body movements. We immediately shifted him to Children Care Hospital. Dr. Atul Sheladiya told us that they would keep him under observation for 76 to 96 hours. Finally, two neurosurgeons Dr. Himanshu Panseriya and Dr. Ritesh Shah carried out different tests and declared my son was brain dead. We were earlier in two minds about organ donation. It was my mother, Rashmiben, who is a strong woman and she decided to donate the organs, and we all agreed on it.”
Managing Trustee of Jeevandeep Organ Donation Vipul Talaviya said, “After intimating the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, the baby was shifted to P P Savani Hospital in Surat from Children Hospital, where the organs were donated. The organs were transplanted to six different children, giving them a new life.”
He further added, “This is the seventh organ donation in Jeevandeep Organ donation and 39 people have benefitted so far.”
