Normal life was affected in Kutch, Morbi and Jamnagar, as heavy rain lashed the three districts, even as the rest of Saurashtra experienced light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday.

Vehicular traffic was halted on at least five village approach roads in Rapar taluka of Kutch after the taluka was pounded by 118 mm of rain between 6 am and 6 pm on Tuesday.

Ketankumar Chaudhary, mamlatdar of Rapar, said that vehicular traffic had to be halted on Rapar-Fatehgadh road, Balasar-Jatavada road, Adesar-Nandha road, Rav Moti-Suvai road and a few others. “Causeways on these roads were flooded, making them dangerous for vehicular traffic. Therefore, we deployed police and halted vehicular traffic for a few hours to prevent accidents,” Chaudhary told The Indian Express.

He added that while there were no reports of any human injury or loss of life in rain-related incidents in the taluka, a buffalo was killed in Jethasari village after being struck by a lightning bolt.

“As Rapar is surrounded by desert, water has started receding after the rain stopped. Agriculture in Rapar is largely rain-fed and these are much-needed showers after a dry August,” Chaudhary said.

Neighbouring Bhachau and Gandhidham taluka of Kutch reported 22 and 18 mm of rain, respectively, while the remaining seven talukas experienced light showers. In adjoining Morbi district, Maliya taluka logged 90 mm of rain during the same period while Halvad (78 mm), Morbi (78), Tankara (71) and Wankaner (52) talukas also received heavy rainfall.

Ghodadhrod and Machchhu-III dams started overflowing while Machhu-I was put on alert after it was filled 85 per cent of its capacity.

In Jamnagar, normal life was thrown out of gear temporarily, as the city recorded more than two inches of rain between 12 pm and 2 pm.

In all, the city logged 79 mm (more than three inches) of rain during 12 hours ending at 6 pm on Tuesday. Kalavad taluka recorded 28 mm rainfall while other four talukas reported light showers.
