Heres a band that started out with original compositions in the UK. Alan Gillibrand,Anthony Elliot and Mark Roberts played together in a band that made original music. In 2002 they unanimously sought a vehicle to push their music career. It was then that the band realised how close their sound was to U2s. The group already had a bassist, guitarist and drummer; they were on a lookout for someone to play Bono,U2s vocalist. We found Stuart (Wilkinson),who sounded like Bono and we instantly asked him to be a part of the band, says Roberts, the bands drummer. Elevation was formed shortly after. The band is being brought
to the city by Cocoparra,Mundhwa,in association with Seagrams 100 Pipers.
Apart from recognising how similar U2 and our sounds were,we also seized the opportunity to pay our respect to a band which has inspired us so greatly as musicians, says Roberts. Since each member of the band has his roots in original music,U2s music is filtered through the creative processes of the band members, thus giving the music a unique touch. Being musicians,we often take the creative freedom to improvise a bit on stage, but that depends solely on our mood and the feel of the audience. But the modifications that we
make are very minor, because as a tribute band, our job is to stay as true to U2s music as possible,
says Roberts.
The band pays a lot of attention to subtle nuances in U2s music and live sets. We study and break down their live performances and incorporate elements from them into our sets. I would like to believe weve been successful in our emulation since we have toured extensively with our act and received
overwhelming responses from audience back home and overseas, says Roberts.
On being asked if Elevation has had the opportunity to meet U2,Roberts says,No,weve never met them. But with the kind of appreciation and love weve got from the audience, were definitely on our way there. It would be really interesting to meet them, especially if they see us perform and think were doing a good job.
Elevations set in the city will consist of songs encompassing 30 years of U2s music. We will be
performing songs from some of the bands earliest albums such as Out of Control to the more recent ones, adds Roberts.
The band will perform at Cocoparra on Wednesday at 8 pm
