From the new academic session starting July, locating various departments in the University of Pune (UoP) will become easier. The varsity will put up 19 maps at various sites inside the campus, including one at the three entrance gates each to help visitors and students find their way.
The maps, with blue background, will show the road network in white. The names of the various departments will also be in white. A red dot will be used to denote the point where the map has been installed so that it can act as a point of reference.
The red dot will indicate where a person is standing with a you are here signage on the map. About three days ago,we put up a sample map near the hostel office and invited feedback and suggestion over the next one week. After that we will invite quotations from professional map makers. Were hoping the work will be completed before the new academic session starts in July, said R V Patil, executive engineer,Estates department,UoP.
The need for a map was felt after we received several complaints that roads inside the university are confusing and locating most departments is difficult. We will put up the maps at major forks in the roads. Till now,we had name plates at various places and arrows pointing towards major landmarks, but visitors were of the view that there were not adequate. So we decided to go for the maps, added Patil.
The maps will be made as per the standards defined by the Indian Road Congress. Patil explained that the main focus of the maps will be to highlight and clarify the network of roads so that visitors dont have to ask for directions.
Afshan Khatoon,a foreign national who has been living in the varsity hostel for over a year now is of the view that it will be especially beneficial for those who come to the UoP campus for short visits and short-term courses. Earlier, when I had come to this campus for a few courses at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA),almost ever time I would lose my way. As most lanes are narrow and winding, even passersby find it difficult to explain directions. A map will help locate any place easily on the campus, she said.
