One of those peevish things, the wait at traffic signals is a moment when some of the most trivial activities take centrestage
City motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, face numerous daily woes. Commuting long distances,in rain and scorching heat,on bumpy roads,is just one of them. And then therere those long waits at traffic signals, which seem interminable, especially when you want to reach somewhere real fast. So,what do people do when they are stuck at signals for what seems like forever? While most people check whether they have any new messages or calls, others switch off car engines or train their eyes to spot some good-looking faces! In all,the responses, which ranged from the expected to the wildly unconventional, were nothing short of a revelation.

Most of the time,I check my cell to see if Ive got any calls or messages. My dad calls me five times a day,ha! So,I need to reassure him Im alive and kicking. Although I find this habit very irritating,I also understand my parents concern for me and hence,I do this.

I check my cell, mostly,to see if there are any important calls and messages. I put on the handsfree while driving,so that I can talk even when Im driving. It also helps to have the handsfree on as sometimes, theres an important call which you just cant afford to miss.

Checking out PYTs is my favourite pastime while at signals. I also love listening to the FM while driving. So mostly,Im either lowering or increasing the volume of my handset, depending on the song thats playing. Im a huge music buff and listening to music is definitely music to my ears.

When theres a longish wait at the signal and there are cops standing just ahead of it,I ensure my license and other documents are in place. I wouldnt want to be caught without them, especially towards the end of the month.

The first thing I do while waiting for a long time at a traffic signal is to switch off the engine of my car. Then, although the temptation to check out if theres a message or missed call on the mobile phone is strong,I generally try to avoid it. But switching off the engine of my car is I think a good habit and one that others should also take up.

Im not a very organised person and hence, whenever theres a long wait at the traffic signal,I try to get my car and bag in order. I arrange documents which generally lie haphazardly in my office bag or I try to do some cleaning around in my car itself, especially the area around the dashboard.

“When I’m on the signal,I check out what other people are doing. Let me tell you that the variety of things they keep doing is amazing. While some watch girls, others adjust their helmets and some others check their mobile phones. But I myself personally prefer to keep tabs on others’ actions and hardly get time to do anything else. It’s the most wonderful way to kill time while at the signal.”
