With elections round the corner, while many youngsters in the city are geared up with their voting cards, two city students have instead designed a working model of the electronic voting machine. The model that was a part of Proj-X,the state level project competition organised by Sinhgad Academy of Engineering also won a special prize at the contest.

The hosts won three prizes out of five in various categories. The competitions had around 82 teams from over 30 colleges from all over the state displaying their work in the form of posters and working models. The models were a part of the syllabus projects of the students of the third and final year of Electronics,Instrumentation and Electronics and Telecommunication.

Ruchi Jindal and Shubhang Tripathi ,third year electronics and telecommunication students’ electronic voting machine was the most outstanding. “We made a working model of the voting machine very similar to the one that will be used, but simpler, easier and with a less budget. It took us around three months,” adds Jindal.

With a range of innovations including GPS tracking devices,RSID based tracking devices, out of sight firing systems and so on the event was initiated by professor Khot with the college further planning to conduct it at a national level. While Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) and Pune Institute of Computer Technology (PICT) bagged the first and the second prize respectively in the working model category; SAE won both the prizes in poster category in addition to a special prize.

Working over an year under the guidance of DRDO Paroma Dutta,Astha Singh and Rachit Jain’s -Unmanned vehicle localisation using odometric censors bagged the first prize in the poster competition. Explaining the project Dutta adds,“Computed on real time it is an alternative to GPS and determines the location of vehicle with respect to the reference position. It predicts the distance and direction by monitoring the vehicle over any terrain. An absolutely new concept based on odometry which finds the actual position and orientation of the robot,on measurement of angles and rotation of the rear wheels. It can be used, where satellite link is inaccessible like tunnels, forests and mountains.”
