The burst pipeline: repairs on
A day after a major pipeline burst on Yerawada Bridge,Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) workers were still working on repairs till late Tuesday evening, leaving around 40 per cent of the city without water. The areas affected were Yerawadaq,Vishrantwadi,Kalyani Nagar,Sangamwadi and nearby areas.
PMC officials said there was a leakage in the pipeline that was yet to be repaired. On Tuesday morning,PMC officials said residents had been given a temporary relief when water was supplied at low pressure between 8 am and 11 am.
Reports of another pipeline burst on Tuesday are not true. Due to poor visibility,we could not complete the work on Monday night. As a result, there was still some leakage from the pipeline. On Tuesday morning, water supply was restored for a few hours despite the leakage as we did not want the residents to suffer for two days in a row, said PMC development engineer (water supply) Pramod Nirbhavane.
The PMC was expecting to restore the supply by late Tuesday evening. Nirbhavane said this was the first incidence of a pipeline burst in the last 15-20 years.
Traffic on the affected lane of the bridge continued to be affected; the status quo is likely to remain on Wednesday too as the road would have to be surfaced before being thrown open for traffic.
Meanwhile, irate residents in the affected areas were hunting for alternative means to get water and there was a spurt in the number of private tankers supplying water to these areas. We were caught unawares. The pipeline burst on Monday morning and after that the PMC could have sent a few tankers for supplying water to us. We had to resort to bore wells, said Rashmi Ture,a resident from Sangamwadi.
Since morning, people have been queuing up to fill water from our borewell. We supplied water to over 300 people till evening and another 100 are expected to come by night, said Sameer Nikam,a Sangamwadi resident.
