Journalist Nikhil Wagle’s vehicle was allegedly assaulted by workers of Pune Unit of Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday night when he was on his way – along with fellow activists – to a rally venue in Pune.

The videos showed Wagle, Vishwambhar Choudhari, and Asim Sarode’s vehicle being stopped by BJP workers, the window panes being broken with punches, as they shouted slogans and demanded that Wagle be pulled out of the vehicle. The police and volunteers of Nirbhay Bano who were accompanying the vehicle seemed completely helpless as BJP workers landed blows on the car, threw eggs, and ink as they shouted slogans against Wagle.

Wagle, along with activist Vishwambhar Choudhari, human rights lawyer Asim Sarode participated in the ‘Nirbhay Bano’ event at Pune’s Sane Guruji Smarak. While BJP’s Pune Unit had opposed the event citing Wagle’s presence at the event, opposition parties including Congress, NCP, and AAP had come out in support. Wagle is facing fresh heat from BJP over his social media post against BJP leader LK Advani being honored with the Bharat Ratna award.

Choudhari confirmed the assault saying, “The vehicle we were travelling in was attacked with stones and eggs. The windshield of our vehicle was broken. Glass shards went all over us. The police managed to get us here safe.

Several opposition leaders including congress leaders Ravindra Dhangekar, Mohan Joshi, Ramesh Bagwe, NCP’s Rohit Pawar attended the event.
