UoP’s Eng dept: no exchange programme for MPhil students

The Department of English at the University of Pune (UoP) is going through a crisis.

The Department of English at the University of Pune (UoP) is going through a crisis. In the wake of a dearth of guides for its students pursuing MPhil degree, students this year will not be able to go for a one-year exchange programme to Germany.

The University has been initiating this programme with German universities like Dresden and Tubingen for the past few years. However, this year, due to unavailability of sufficient number of guides for the students, the university is discontinuing the programme.

Dr Bajrang Korde, head of the department,English,UoP,said,“The university had been organising exchange programmes with German universities in which two students from the department are sent to Germany. The students stay there for one academic year. However, this year the lack of guides has forced us to discontinue the programme.” Korde added,“There are quite a few takers for the MPhil and PhD course but the number of guides available are not adequate. The number of students going for the degree has increased in the past few years but the number of guides has not increased in the same proportion.”

Korde said the reason for this might be that the people interested in becoming guides have to go through various steps, which might take a lot of time. “To become a guide, one has to have a certain eligibility. One has to be a PhD,has to have independent researches for three years and has to publish at least two independent research papers,” said Korde.

This year, there are as many as 25 MPhil students but only three guides.
