The main aim of education is to enable an individual to distinguish between right and wrong. But does that really happen? Our education system has been manufacturing educated parrots in thousands every year. Till the time the education system is not questioned,we cannot have individuals who think independently, said former Supreme Court judge Justice PB Joshi. Joshi was speaking at the 104th convocation of the University of Pune (UoP).
On the adverse effects that western education has had on our system of education,Joshi said,The western system has harmed us in two ways. First,we have ignored our past contributions in the respective fields and neglected to evolve our own models. Second,we have relied only on the US and the UK and completely ignored the contributions made by other countries in various subjects.
In his convocation address,UoP Vice-Chancellor RK Shevgaonkar said,From this convocation, the degrees awarded to the students will be uploaded on the website of the university with a 2D security barcode system. With this system, verification of certificates will be easy. Employers and foreign universities will be able to verify the certificates electronically. Also,a new integrated post graduate programme on technology will be started from the next academic year. The university had taken special initiatives for promoting a research culture at the varsity.
About 280 projects worth several crores were funded by the university under this scheme. We have also taken the unique initiative of introducing a compulsory course on human rights for all students, irrespective of their degrees and discipline, he added.
