On the 63rd Independence Day,Puneites share what freedom really means to them
Swatee Gulati,homemaker
Freedom for me is to be able to dream and to be empowered enough to voice my opinion. I feel empowered when Im able to send my daughter to the same school as my son. After decades of independence, there are still pockets in our country where the girl child is considered unlucky.
Dr Arundhati Sardesai,educationist
Independence Day is a chance for us to understand the youth of our nation better. Everyone is capable of doing a lot,we just need to muster up the will for it. The youth need to be spurred on by the example set by worthy role models. I refuse to believe that all people are self-centered,they are just not aware of their strengths.
Seema Malhotra,MD,Weikfield Mnemonix
Freedom is being comfortable knowing that my thoughts are my own and have not been forced on to me. It also signifies the unique individuality that each person can have.
Ashok Salian,tea stall owner
Even though we are an independent nation, the poor are forced to work under others because they don’t have the economic freedom to choose what they want to do. In that sense, there’s still a long way to go for us.
Surendra Acharya,mechanic
For me,freedom is about being able to practice the profession I choose. I’m from Karnataka and still I can continue working here without feeling out of place.
