The Pune city traffic police have said that they will launch a helpdesk at their Yerawada office, starting August 28, to assist violators to dispose of challans against them at reduced compounding charges. According to police, a Lok Adalat is also scheduled to be held on September 9 to dispose of pending challans.

Officials from the Pune city traffic control branch said on Thursday that a meeting on pending challans for traffic violations was held at the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), which was attended by judicial officers from the Pune District Legal Air Authority and Judicial Magistrate First Class from the Pune Motor Vehicle Court.

It was decided during the meeting that on the backdrop of the scheduled Lok Adalat, a help desk would be set up at the office of Pune traffic police in bungalow no. 6, next to the Yerawada post office, to provide information and assist vehicle owners with pending challans, and help them get a reduced compounding amount. The helpdesk at the Pune traffic police’s office would be held from August 28, from 11 am to 2 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm.

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and other legal services institutions conduct lok adalats — as “alternative dispute redressal mechanism”. It is a forum where disputes or cases pending in courts of law or pre-litigation stage are settled or compromised amicably. Lok adalats have been given the statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
