The traffic control branch of the Pune police has proposed a set of changes to be made at the university junction as a short term solution to traffic woes. The junction is one of the most crucial bottlenecks in the city as it handles traffic from Aundh,Baner,Pashan,Senapati Bapat Road,Shivajinagar and from inside the varsity campus.
The Pune traffic police have sent a proposal to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) in this regard. Cops have asked the civic body to make these changes as soon as possible to help ease the traffic congestion.
One of the important alteration suggested by the traffic police is the repositioning of the PMPML bus stop, which is on the left hand of the university main gate. Because of this bus stop, traffic moves very slowly whenever a bus stops even for few seconds. This causes a lot of congestion as many vehicles come from the suburbs side. We have asked the authorities to move it further in the direction of Shivajinagar, Pandhare said.
He added,A lot of space under the flyover is covered by trees and pedestrian highlands. We have proposed reduction in area of plants and repositioning of the highlands. This make a lot more space available for vehicles and also makes it easier for pedestrians to cross the road.
Another important suggestion by the traffic police is the repositioning of the police chowky at the university gate. We have also asked the PMC to remove a tree near the university gate. Also, there is a small alley that connects Senapati Bapat Road to University Square, which is used by a lot of cars. We have asked the PMC to allow only two-wheelers by placing bars. The civic body said it will get back to us after studying the feasibility of the proposed changes.
