With a number of international-level wins behind him,DJ Vikas J now looks forward to the release of his latest collection of original songs

Unlike most 20-year-olds,Vikas Jangamwad aka DJ Vikas J,does not spend his time hanging out with friends or worrying about work and college. He is usually found in his studio, composing or producing music for international radio shows and releasing them on online music stores. His remixes have been aired on international radio shows such as Bobby Friction’s show on the BBC Asian Network and on the South African dance radio channel,Lotus FM.

Currently,he is looking forward to the September release of six original tracks that will be available on major online music stores. He admits that he doesn’t know how to play musical instruments; instead,he uses software to replicate the sound of different instruments. Each of the six tracks is his original work,he says, and each of them covers a different genre. He also enjoys experimenting with sound and has tried to treat each track with a new approach. “Electronic music is not just about Western music and I want to show that different things can be done with it. In my new track,Indian Trip ,I’ve used the sitar, the shehnai and other traditional Indian instruments. I am trying new things in the hope that electronic dance music will be understood better some day,” says Jangamwad, who first started remixing songs and creating music at the age of 14.

After his father realised that he was serious about music, the DJ got the go-ahead to pursue a sound engineering course and follow his passion. Since then,he has won many DJ contests, including the War of DJs that took place last year. Moreover in April this year,he was named India’s 6th best DJ by the website thedjlist.com,a worldwide directory for DJs. His most recent win is the Worldwide Official Remix Contest 2012. Organised by Bollywood music producer Amit Das and by British label Flava Records,DJs from all over the world were invited to remix Das’ song Dance Till Sunlight . “In my remix,I introduced genres such as progressive house, electronic and dubstep. My entry doesn’t belong to any one genre; this is why my track won the contest,” he points out.
