Showcasing a slice of the cinematic brilliance that one associates with director Satyajit Ray,the book,A textual Study of Apu Trilogy written by late Prof Satish Bahadur and Shyamia Vanarase was released on Tuesday. The function which was held at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) on Tuesday had eminent filmmaker Arun Khopkar as the chief guest. Chairing the discussion that followed was former director of the National Film Archives of India,PK Nair. The book which deals with three of Ray’s classics namely Pather Panchali (1955),Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) speaks in detail about the work that went behind making these films. Those present on the ocassion as speakers were film teacher and historian Anil Zankar,his associate Kishor Vasvani and Rakesh Manjul,editor of the book.

Words Are All I Have

Sunday evening saw Puneites immersed in the beauty of poetry at the Pune Marriott Hotel and Convention Centre,Senapati Bapat Road. Lyricist Prasoon Joshi performed along with singer Shubha Mudgal. Joshi spoke about the increasing use of English words in Hindi film songs. Had I used junoon instead of ‘H2SO4’ when I wrote Masti Ki Pathshala (Rang de Basanti) ,it wouldn’t have topped the charts, says Joshi. He stresses on the respect that we should have for Hindi. “The use of English words in songs is fine to a certain extent. But we shouldn’t add words randomly,” he insists. Writing poetry is not too different from penning lyrics for a film song. “I never keep the difference in mind while writing. Only when I’m done does the piece get its definition of a poem or song. I am proud to be a part of our film fraternity as it has people like Javed Akhtar and Gulzar associated with it,” he adds.
