An auto-rickshaw driver was allegedly murdered by a blacksmith following a brawl over gambling at Azad Chowk near Nigdi Ota scheme late on Saturday night. The Nigdi police arrested the accused,Sambhaji Dhondiram Kharat of Dalvinagar,Nigdi Ota,in the early hours of Sunday. Police said auto driver Vilas Sheshrao Randive (35),a resident of Rahulnagar in Nigdi Ota scheme,was playing cards with Kharat and others when a fight ensued over distribution of money. The two started hitting each other. Randive ran away but Kharat chased him and hit him with a stone. Randive was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later, said Inspector (Crime) P N Supekar. Supekar said Kharat was produced before court on Sunday and was remanded in police custody till March 7.
Insurance agent held for fraud
An insurance agent was arrested by the Bund Garden Police on Saturday for allegedly duping an automobile dealer to the tune of Rs 1.19 crore. According to the police,suspect Vinayak Shamrao Khandekar,36,a resident of Warje and working at The New India Assurance Companys Karve Road branch,duped Kiranpal Singh Ahluwalia (41) of Silver Jubilee Motors Limited,Camp,by pocketing commission meant for the dealer from the insurance company on insurance of vehicles between January 2008 and May 2012. Police said another suspect Ashok Vasant Harshe was absconding. The police said the insurance company used to pay commission to the automobile dealer for insurance of vehicles sold by it. Khandekar allegedly made bogus documents stating that the automobile dealers name had been changed to Silver Jubilee Solutions and that Harshe was its director. Inspector S B Nikam,who is investigating the case,said: Khandekar submitted documents,including that of an account opened in the Sanseva Sahakari Bank,to the insurance company,which made payments to the tune of Rs 2.86 crore. Out of this amount,Khandekar gave Rs 1.67 crore to Ahluwalia and kept the rest with him. Investigations are on to nab his accomplices and find out who others helped them in the forgery and cheating.
