To promote shooting as a sport at the grassroots level and encourage new talent,the Gun for Glory shooting meet from August 3 to August 9 will bring shooters of national and international repute together for a competition. As a part of the initiative by the Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation,the first edition of the Gun For Glory Shooting Championship will be held at Balewadi Range.
Pawan Singh,assistant coach,Indian Shooting Team and director for Gun For Glory Academy,said,The main aim of the academy and events like these is to spot new talent and train them to compete at the international level. As of now,1,000 people are participating in the event.
The event also aims at bringing fans on a common platform with shooters. They will also have an opportunity to try their hand at the sport. The event will see a total of 40 prizes worth Rs 35 lakh. It is being conducted under the aegis of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI),the governing body for shooting sports in the country. While there are various categories for general participants,the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) events are restricted to international shooters.
Singh added,The scores achieved by the shooters in the championship will be considered for the national squad 2012. Some of the international shooters who will be coming for the event include Annuraj Singh (Olympic Quota Winner for London 2012),Rahi Sarnobat (Olympic Quota Winner for London 2012),Anjali Bhagwat (3-time Olympian and ISSF Champion of Champions),Samresh Jung (Best Athlete in 2006 Commonwealth Games,Ronak Pandit (former Junior World Champion),Anisa Sayyed (Commonwealth Games Gold medallist),Tejaswini Sawant (World champion in 50m rifle prone) and Navnath Fartade (former Junior World Champion).
The shooting competition will also provide fans a full-fledged chance to experience the sport first hand. To ensure that India can challenge the shooters from China in the next Olympics,we need to develop and popularise the sport in India. And the aspirants also need to understand the type of pressure that needs to be handled while playing this sport, said ace shooter Gagman Narang.
