The young & the fit

Power yoga, rigorous work outs, low carb and high protein diets – celebrities have ways aplenty to tone their bodies and look perfectly fit.

Youngsters may not have the time or money to indulge in expensive fitness regimes, but they are armed with their own ways of staying healthy

Power yoga, rigorous work outs, low carb and high protein diets – celebrities have ways aplenty to tone their bodies and look perfectly fit. And even though these famous personalities endorse different methods of staying healthy, not everyone has the time or money or energy to indulge in them. And especially not Gen Y!

With gyms charging the higher thousands, youngsters who depend on their pocket money for survival can barely afford the plush equipments. And add to this their weakness for junk food. While the pizzas, burgers, french fries and so on are relished, they do also up the calories. So how then do the collegians stay slim and fit? Yatika Arora,a BBA student at Balaji Group of Institutions, quips,“I walk as much as I can. For short distances,I walk instead of hailing an autorickshaw. According to me,the more we become slave to technology, the more unfit we become. I also make it a point to climb up stairs instead of using the elevator. It helps me lose weight and also stay in shape.”

A fitness freak is how Shruti Anand’s friends describe her. The 20-something,who is currently pursuing her Masters in Computer Applications, says,”I like keeping fit and for that I avoid oily food. I never miss my morning run and I also have a mixture of honey and lemon in water before breakfast. Apart from that,I include a lot of fruits in my diet. It’s not that I am averse to working out at a gym,but I think that making a few lifestyle changes and sticking to a schedule can give long-term benefits than resorting to rigorous work-outs.” Echoing the same thought is Puja Mukherjee,a second year BBA student, who feels that working out everyday coupled with a few diet changes can go a long way in keeping one fit. “I have a fixed routine. I also eat small meals instead of two large meals a day. In this way,I avoid those extra calories. Plus,I am not particularly addicted to beverages,” she reveals.

With daily assignments,a hectic study schedule, many do not have the time to stick to a proper fitness and diet regime. For law student Pooja Patil, eating home-cooked food and staying away from junk as much as possible makes all the difference. “I prefer eating meals cooked at home. This is healthy as well as economical for me. I also make it a point to eat on time,” says she. Youngsters and junk food are inseparable but Pooja indulges in the munchies only sparingly. “Unlike others, you won’t find me digging into junk food everyday,” she quips.

The younger generation has other ‘keeping fit’ tricks up their sleeves too. For engineering student Anuj Sharma, sports make up his fitness mantra. “I play outdoor games like badminton and cricket, and I swim regularly,” he says. Chaikhomba,a BSC student, adds,“Playing basketball for an hour is my way of keeping the fat at bay. I don’t restrict myself when it comes to food but I do keep away from aerated drinks as much as I can.”
