With more and more people pledging their support to the ‘no plastic’ path, even Cummins,as part of its corporate responsibility initiative, has launched a project this year called ‘Towards No Plastic Bags’. It endeavours to replace plastic bags with newspaper bags. Before launching the project externally,a pilot was undertaken at Cummins’ campus in Pune, and soon replicated at all other Cummins sites across India. The project has so far helped in replacing 1,00,000 plastic bags consumed within and outside of Cummins, with bags made from newspaper. Company employees have also spread awareness about the ill-effects of plastic through various drives. The project has also equipped the differently-abled groups associated with various NGOs and women self-help groups with relevant training and skills to facilitate their participation in the manufacturing process. Some of the participating NGOs in this paper bag project are Poona Blind School and Swayamsiddha Apang Vikaas Samaj Sanstha.
