The fashionable race

The pounding hooves, the cheers and cries, the clutched Cole booklets, the heady enthusiasm – the racing season has all this and more.

Layered dresses, smart chiffon blouses and trendy fascinators – That’s what you should be seen in at the Pune Racing Season 2010,that begins today

The pounding hooves, the cheers and cries, the clutched Cole booklets, the heady enthusiasm – the racing season has all this and more. The Pune Racing Season 2010 kicks off today, and among its striking aspects is its fashion. Boutiques and malls may be clearing off their stock this season, but at the same time, trends and styles will rain down on this monsoon sporting activity.

Every year, the racing fans dig out the latest fashion fads and kowtow to the word of designers. It’s not just a sport; it’s a lifestyle event. The only times that Puneites really dress up are weddings,cocktail/evening parties and the races. It’s true that the dress code rules were relaxed last year by the RWITC to encourage more people, the youth in particular,to step into the racing enclosures, but club chairman Vivek Jain says,“Shorts are a definite no-no,and t-shirts are avoidable. Men can probably lose the jacket and the tie,but we’d still encourage everyone to keep to the tradition and dress their formal best.”

And what is that formal best? Designer Swati Dholepatil says,“Right now,a lot of layering is in . To stand out at the races, especially the derby and other big weekend races, opt for this style. Long, formal dresses teamed with pretty hats look nice, but then if you think practically, this may not be too viable. Since it’s the monsoon season, and a day event, choose short dresses that have a formal edge to them.” Florals that created a stir last year are being replaced with digital prints, she adds. “In fabrics, crepes look beautiful, especially in pleasing pastel shades. Though white is the perfect daytime colour, avoid it on an overcast day as you wouldn’t want to get caught in the rain wearing white!” she says.

Hats have always been associated with the races, pretty lace ones in particular. This season will be no different. Michelle Poonawalla says,“At our SA Poonawalla Million Race,we promote hats, but if you can’t carry it off, then wear a fascinator instead – hairbands with a pretty flower or net. Nowadays, the comb-like clips with flowers too are a rage.”

That is what Tanvi Mehta Deole, merchandiser,Rudraksh Designer Store, will probably opt for as she quips,“Hats may be the symbol of ‘racewear’ but it takes a certain amount of taste and style to carry them off! I’m not a hat person, but I’ll definitely don trendy knee-length dresses this season. I go for a few races, and I’ve noticed that dresses beat all the other outfits. White combined with brighter colours will be my choice. For a funky touch to the outfit, beads and bag will do the trick.”

So clear your closet, and chuck the casuals to one side. “Bring out all your day dresses,” urges Poonawalla. “People generally confuse nightwear with daywear, and end up wearing party dresses to the races. Choose light, flowy outfits, even some structured ones in pastel colours or with floral prints,” she says. For those girls who aren’t too comfortable with wearing dresses, there’s always the choice of teaming a good pair of trousers with a shirt. “Pick a smart chiffon blouse, and you’re ready to go,” she adds.

The Pune races have, over the years, become synonymous with the Poonawalla family. They are known to make a style statement at every race. And so,Poonawalla continues with her expert tips,“Though suits are no longer compulsory for men,it’s always nice if they wear them. They can drop the tie if they want and wear just the shirt with a blazer. Cream, white or khakee suits are ideal.”
