Being a calligraphy artist requires a lot of patience and creativity, says senior calligraphy artist Achyut Palav, who recently held an exhibition of his works, along with that of his students,at the Bal Gandharva Art Gallery,J M Road. It’s a neglected art form but the irony is that we just cannot do without it. All the fonts you use on computers are initially created by calligraphy artists and then modified electronically, says Palav. The exhibition, titled “Akshrotsav”,was literally a celebration of alphabets. The Devnagari script was artistically painted on all the steps leading up to the exhibition hall. Inside,a creative array of calligraphy work done on unconventional objects like lampshades, brown paper bags, jute handbags, bedsheets and more kept the visitors hooked. “Some of them wanted to buy the pieces on display but we encouraged them to learn the art form and do it themselves, says Santosh Potdar, organiser of the exhibition. Palav will conduct a workshop from November 18 to 20 at the Symbiosis Nursery School,Prabhat Road.
