Try out momos and dimsums to relish the taste of steamed food served spiced with Oriental flavours
They might resemble each other but if your culinary knowledge is up-to-date,youd be aware that Momos and Dimsums differ in both the stuffing and in the way they are prepared. While Momo is a Tibetian dish,Dimsums have their origin in Canton (China). Also while dimsums offer a variety of stuffing and are steamed along with spring onion and soup the momos traditionally are supposed to be filled only with pork and boiled in water,which have been modified here to suit our tastes. Talking about their specialty,as the name suggests,K Siddharth,COO,Monsoon Momos says,We serve authentic momos that are originally from Tibet. In fact,we had visited Tibet especially to learn about momos. While Tibetan momos contain pork,we modified our momos to suit the Indian taste buds. Monsoon momos thus serves three types of momos chicken,mutton and vegetarian. We can also make Paneer Momos,but that is as per demand, adds Siddharth. Monsoon Momos has one outlet in Model Colony near the Toyota showroom while the other one is near Kedari Petrol Pump in Wanowrie.

A variety of Momos are served at Yo China outlets. While the vegetarian varieties are available in three fillings,such as spring onion,corn and Schezwan Momo,the non-vegetarian types offer chicken dumplings,chicken Schezwan dumpling and chilli chicken dumpling. All these are steamed momos and are served with sweet chili sauce,peanut sauce,hot garlic sauce or Schezwan sauce, says Badri Rath,manager,YO China. The variety of dimsums served at YO China include fried,pan fried and deep fried and are available in three fillings — chicken,veg and prawns.

Mainland China serves dimsums with some authentic ingredients brought in from the East. The two varieties are Sui mai open flour dumpling and Hargao dumpling offered with chicken,vegetable and prawns stuffing. Served along with a black pepper sauce that has ginger,garlic,soya and tempered with hot oil,the other sauces are mustard and pickled ginger. The Hargao dumpling dough is prepared using dimsum and Tapioca flour which are actually transparent so that you can see the meat within, informs Ragid Das,Chef de Cuisine. The prices vary from Rs 140 to 190 for a portion.

If you are on the lookout for a healthier snack in the middle of your shopping spree,this is the perfect place and the ideal dish to gorge on. The small counter outside the megastore serves steamed momos. Keeping it simple,the momos are available in chicken and vegetable stuffings,with a further choice of either four or six per plate. Served along with a red sauce,it has the most tempting,pungent taste. The dough is fashioned into small circular flat pieces and the round pocket dumplings are steamed and served hot. Reasonable enough,the price varies between Rs 30 and 45.
