The police said the students were returning from the Lonavala hill station in a Maruti Swift car. Around 5.45 am, their car allegedly rammed into a container truck near Eidgah Maidan, Dehu Road, in Pune.
The police identified the deceased as Divyaraj Singh Rathod, 23, from Rajasthan, and Siddhant Anand Shekhar, 22, from Jharkhand. Their friends Nihal Tamboli, 20, and Harshavardhan Mishra, 22, were injured in the accident, said the police.
After receiving information about the accident, a team from the Dehu Road police station in Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with highway safety patrol and fire brigade teams, rushed to the spot.
The victims were taken to a hospital, but the doctors declared Rathod and Shekhar dead. Their bodies were taken for a post-mortem. The two injured students are undergoing treatment at a private hospital, according to the police.
The Dehu Road police filed an FIR and detained the truck driver, Manish Kumar Manipal, 39, on charges of negligent driving.
Vikram Bansode, Inspector of the Dehu Road police station, said, “The car belonged to Nihal Tamboli. He was driving. The accident occurred when the truck on the same route slowed down. Due to it, the car went on to collide with the truck.”
“Further investigation is on. The injured students are now stable,” added Bansode.
