Supreme Court Justice and member of National Human Rights Commission Shivraj Patil felicitated newly elected member of legislative council (MLC) advocate Vandana Chavan on Thursday in a function arranged by Pune Bar Association (PBA) in the Pune district court.

Chavan said that after experiencing the first session,she realised that the bills pertaining to a new law are just tabled before the Council,without giving their drafts to the MLCs. “I shall forward a request to give a draft copy of these bills so that we can think them over,” she said. Chavan,who practiced as a civil lawyer in Pune district court till 1991 was also the secretary of the Pune Bar Association then.

“We need educated persons like Chavan in politics to enhance the quality of politicians,” Patil said during the felicitation.

As part of the function,Patil also delivered a lecture on ‘Secularism: a constitutional value’. “Indian has been able to develop into what it is today only because of its secular values,” he said.

PBA president advocate Milind Pawar delivered the welcome address.
