Shiamak Davars troupe brought Broadway Musical to the city to pay a tribute to the legends.
Round tables laid elegantly across a ballroom, bottles of champagne and trays laid with exotic caviar the stage was set perfect for Broadway Musical at JW Marriott on Wednesday. As the citys glamorous crowd took their seats, the room lit up with psychedelic rings and a man dressed nattily in a suit walked in.
A familiar voice caused whispers in the audience as they guessed who it was Agent 007,James Bond. He charmed the audience with Adeles award-winning Skyfall and vanished into one of the wings of the stage just as a sultry Bond girl came crooning to Golden Eye. Her rather seductive act was followed by an avatar of Madonna with a power-packed Die Another Day performance.
With one dance followed by another but no story to tell, the performance fell short of doing justice to its title Broadway Musical, also losing the audiences attention in parts. However, the elaborate costumes and backgrounds made up and managed to keep the Broadway mood.
Soon, dancers in velvet red jackets broke out into a synchronised act to woo a girl dressed in a white showgirl outfit, followed by dancers in multicoloured can-can skirts performing the signature knee-up-kick-out step to a jazzed up version of the song Chamma Chamma.
The next segment saw the stage filled with girls and boys jiving to hits such as Dancing Queen,Voulez-Vous and Mamma Mia by ABBA. Those in the audience who were not already on their feet, swayed in their seats. After ABBA,it was time to celebrate the music of Freddie Mercury,Britains first Asian rockstar. The high energy performance featured hits such as Crazy little thing called love,Another one bites the dust and We will rock you that the audience sang in chorus.
The performance concluded with a tribute to King of Pop,Michael Jackson. After performing the moonwalk and the slant, the dancers broke into a jugalbandi with Bharatanatyam dancers who suddenly appeared on the stage. But what could have been a grand finale turned into a half-baked fusion performance on Billy Jean,Beat it and The way you make me feel distorted with Indian beats.
