Stone wall to block view of district and sessions court

The Pune district and sessions court building, one of the city’s architectural landmarks with its colonial stone structure dotted with colourful flowers at the entrance, may soon be out of sight for passersby.

The building will soon be guarded by a five-foot stone wall and three-foot net fence. To manage crowds, court timings were changed on March 1. The efforts are part of a move to address security concerns and convenience of litigants.

“The construction of five-feet stone wall with three-feet fencing around the court is likely to be completed this month. Two watch towers are also being erected on the court premises,” said Pune Bar Association president Milind Pawar. A subway for pedestrians has also been planned to connect the district court to the new family court building. “Asphalting internal roads, setting up a Union Bank of India ATM near gate 4,a post office on court premises and installation of closed circuit television cameras are on the cards,” Pawar said.

Security concerns about the court premises surfaced on May 6,2010,when 25-year-old Rahul Ravindra Nayar from Dehu Gaon was stabbed to death on court premises.

In order to manage crowd and make it easy for police to bring the accused to court,11 joint civil courtrooms have been shifted to the new building on the existing court premises. The anti-corruption courtroom, judicial magistrates first class and chief judicial magistrate’s court replaced joint civil courts on Tuesday. Also, accused from seven police stations in zone I and nine police stations in zone II will be produced in the court for remand orders at 11am instead of 2.30pm. These include Faraskhana,Samarth,Swargate,Dattawadi,Bundgarden,Vishrambaug,Khadak,Deccan,Warje Malwadi,Shivajinagar,Bharati Vidyapeeth,Lashkar,Kothrud and Sahakar nagar police stations. The judges are expected to devote more time to pending cases after the remand work is over by afternoon.
