Philosopher-queen Ahilyabai Holkar comes alive on stage with a new play — Rajyogini Ahilyabai — based on her life and times

Aptly called the philosopher-queen,Ahilyabai Holkar’s place in history of India is irreplaceable. An epitome of bravery, determination and perseverance, this Holkar queen of the Malwa kingdom, has been an inspiration for many. With the motive of brining forth the qualities that this great queen of the 17th century advocated,Mira Films will be staging the play Rajyogini Ahilyabai in Pune this May.

“Every Maharashtrian knows Shivaji Maharaj’s contribution towards the history of this country, but despite being from Maharashtra, not many know what Ahilyabai Holkar did for this country as well as for women in India. Her story, like that of the Rani of Jhansi can be an inspiration to many. It is for this reason that we decided to come up with this mega play on Ahilyabai Holkar in Pune,” says Milind Dastane, director,Mira films.

Earlier staged in Indore, the play,in two-and-a-half hours depicts the political, social and cultural life of Ahilyabai Holkar, thus bringing to light unknown facts about the multifaceted historic image she has been. “While everyone knows that she was born in Maharashtra and married to Maratha warrior Khanderao Holkar, not many know that she was the first one to take up women’s issues seriously. She was also the first lady to start an arms factory.

Through various incidents,we will be unveiling the life of Ahilyabai Holkar in front of the audience,” adds Dastane. Currently under translation and pre-production of the original Hindi play underway, the mega play will include over 200 characters, out of which 25 will portray the main characters, such as Ahilyabai Holkar,Malharrao Holkar,Khanderao Holkar,Raghobadada and so on. Mohan Shete will be translating the play in Marathi. The lead role is played by Archana Chitale. Having won appreciation and precious inputs from Babasaheb Purandare,Dastane is hopeful that the play will accelerate the much-needed process of women’s empowerment. “In today’s times, when almost all sections of society are struggling for reservations based on castes, this play will serve as a reminder, enlightening the viewers about our glorious past. I am hopeful that Ahilyabai’s struggle will inspire them to fight for betterment and development rather than for caste-based reservations,” concludes Dastane.

(The play will be staged at the New English School grounds from May 15 to 20)
