Slow website robs students of scholarship opportunity

Even as the extended deadline of online application for state government's 'eScholarship' is about to end on October 31,many colleges in the city are complaining that the Government of Mahrashtra website has resulted in a large chunk of students failing to register.

Even as the extended deadline of online application for state government’s ‘eScholarship’ is about to end on October 31,many colleges in the city are complaining that the Government of Mahrashtra website has resulted in a large chunk of students failing to register. Students are demanding another extension. The Social Justice and Special Assistance Department had extended the deadline from October 15.

The state government launched the scheme last year to make scholarship process hassle-free and avoid allegedly irregularities in its distribution as in the new system the amount gets directly deposited in beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

But the slow Government of Maharashtra website, where student need to apply online,is proving a major hindrance. “ The website is slow and takes long to open. Sometimes it just does not open. Whenever I try to log in,the website refuses my login saying the name has already been registered. I don’t know what to do,” said Pankaj Raut,a first year engineering student at Modern College of Engineering.

“A lot of students are complaining that due to the slow site they were not able to open it and fill the form. Though the department gave an extension,it’s of little use as the main reason for trouble is the slow server,” said Aftab Anwar Shaikh, principal,Poona College of Arts,Science & Commerce. According to him only 30 per cent students of his college could apply till Saturday.

Principals of other colleges including Fergusson College,Abasaheb Garware College,Sinhangad College Of Engineering,Modern College of Engineering also expressed similar concerns and saying that another extension is necessary to avoid loss to students. However the officials at the Department of the Social Justice are in denial mode. “ We have taken utmost care and have built the website to deal with the traffic. The speed is alright. But even then if students complain and a considerable number of them remain out at the end of the deadline then the department would think about extending the deadline again,” said U.S.Lonare Deputy Secretary,Social Justice and Special Assistance Department.
