Asheesh Sharma completed one year as municipal commissioner of Pimpri-Chinchwad on Monday. It had been a quiet and subdued innings so far for Sharma, unlike his predecessor Dilip Band who hit the headlines with unfailing regularity, both for right and wrong reasons.
Civic activists say though Sharma showed the right inclination and intentions to push the development works, his team including his officers and engineers have been found wanting. Especially,on the road work front the Sharma administration hasnt quiet got its act together. The work on the Pune-Mumbai highway still remains pending even after the highway was thrown open to the traffic in September. Encroachers, especially mechanics and four-wheeler vendors, have taken over footpaths leaving little space for pedestrians or for parking of vehicles.
Every prominent chowk in town poses danger to citizens lives. The Nashik Phata chowk,Bhosari chowk,Nigdi chowk,Chinchwad chowk,Pimpri chowk,Chinchwadgaon or the KSB chowk, they all remain as chaotic as ever threatening to snuff out innocent lives. The biggest headache for citizens is that if they park their vehicles on the roads, the traffic police will pounce on them leading to ugly scenes practically every day. To ease these problems,Sharma put his best foot forward by setting up a separate traffic cell and road maintenance cell. But are these still in existence? We haven’t seen they bringing in any changes in the traffic scenario of the town, said civic activist D G Baliga.
Vouches corporator Maruti Bhapkar,PCMC chief has no control over his administration. It seems the officers don’t listen to him. However,Bhapkar said Sharma is a good and sincere officer. This has been proved when he refused to grant sanction for funds more than what was provided in the budget. During Band’s time, officials used to get funds three times more than budgetory provision, Bhapkar said.
Pointing out that internal roads, drainage work, water pipeline works have been hit badly in all wards,Bhapkar said,Too many big projects were sanctioned during Band’s time. Due to this, small works in the suburbs remained pending creating problems for residents, he said. Congress corporator Babu Nair said Sharma is easily accessible and an officer with positive approach. He has just started getting grip of his administration. He is very practical and full of ideas, Nair said.
Stating that because of too many big projects Sharma has not been able to implement his plans. Nair however said the PCMC chief is really pushing for faster completion of JNNURM projects. Overall,Sharma has given a better and controversy-free administration,Nair said.
