Secondary Education Management Information System (SEMIS) website displays contradictory figures available with Unified District Information Centre for Education (U-DISE) and National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) on the number of trained teachers for Class IX and X in the state. As per the 2012-13 NUEPA data, there are as many as 2,65,639 teachers Class IX and X in the state. Of these, only 11,589 5,395 male and 6,194 female are trained to teach these classes, says the report put up on SEMIS website. Among them 1,649 are undergraduate,4,437 graduate or equivalent,5,383 post-graduate or equivalent, and 120 M.Phil or Ph.D or equivalent. The data for Pune shows that of the total 22,050 teachers, only 1,532 are trained. However,U-DISE data for 2012-13 paints a different picture. As per the data, there are as many as 1,19,331 teachers for Class IX and X in the state. Of these,1,17,796 teachers are trained, says the report. The data for Pune shows that of the total 11,088 teachers,10,837 are trained. Sarjerav Jadhav, secondary education director, claimed that NEUPAs data is not right as all the teachers in the state are trained. Maharashtra is one of the best states when it comes to the number of trained teachers. The U-DISE data is a testimony to that, said Jadhav. He added,To teach in secondary schools, teachers should have a minimum qualification of graduation and B.Ed. There must have been some errors in collecting information. We will talk to NUEPA about the issue, said Jadhav. Arun C Mehta, professor and head,Department of Education Management,NUEPA,said,The data on the website is not official. However, even after a week of informing officials about the disparities in the websites data, authorities are yet to act.
