Second edition of Kinnar Mahotsav to be held on Dec 15
A documentary `Belonging' will bring forth the story of the trans immigrant Anjali Rimi while plays like 'Gulabchi Mastani' and others will focus on the lives of transgenders.
A documentary titled ‘Belonging’ will also be screened at the festival. A platform that showcases their talent and fosters a sense of unity and understanding will have more than 900 members of the transgender community from Pune, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra participating in the second edition of Kinnar Mahotsav to be held at the Anna Bhau Sathe auditorium in Yerawada in Pune on December 15.
A documentary `Belonging’ will bring forth the story of the trans immigrant Anjali Rimi while plays like ‘Gulabchi Mastani’ and others will focus on the lives of transgenders. At least 60 transgender artists from across the country will perform at the event that provides a stage for the community to express themselves and share their stories.
CEO of Serum Institute of India Adar Poonawalla, noted transgender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and other personalities such as social activist Usha Kakade and TV actor Pooja Sharma will be the chief guests at the day long event.Panel discussions, art exhibitions, and interactive sessions aimed at promoting and understanding about transgender issues will be held.
Dr. Manish Jain, executive director of Kineer Services and lead organizer of Kinnar Mahotsav, told The Indian Express, “This event is an opportunity to showcase the incredible talents of the transgender community and foster a sense of acceptance and understanding within society.”
“We believe in the power of art and culture to bring about positive change and break down barriers and envision a future where everyone is celebrated for who they are, regardless of gender identity,” Dr Jain said.
For instance, the documentary `Belonging’ will be screened for the first time in the country and depicts the struggles of Anjali Rimi, a transperson from Hyderabad who travelled to the USA 10 years ago. She will also be attending the event and be present at the screening of the documentary.
The Kinnar Mahotsav aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the transgender community while highlighting their resilience and strength. “Through an array of artistic expressions, attendees will gain insights into the rich cultural heritage and individual stories of the transgender community,” Dr Jain added.
