As RGV’s Phoonk 2 hits the theatres,we ask Puneites about the worst and the best horror films they have seen till date
Ram Gopal Varmas never-say-die spirit can never be challenged as his Phoonk-2 hits the theatre after Phoonk 1 failed to scare the audience. While it is yet to be seen whether it scares the audience or not,it reminds us of many good (read scary) and bad (read funny or sick) horror movies that Indian cinema has so far produced and which have, ironically, different effects on the audience. Massive hits like Gumnaam,Mahal,Bees Saal Baad,or Woh Kaun Thi and C-Grade movies like Zehreeli Raat,Khoobsurat Chudailein or Khooni Saya go on to prove the fact that it takes intelligence and not face to scare people. Good or bad,the recent films have definitely seen some experiments done to bring out the effect on the audience. We speak to few Puneites about the worst and the best Hindi horror movie they have ever seen.

I was recommended 1920 by many of my friends, but it disappointed me and appeared more like a member of Ravanas army. It was more comic. Phoonk,in itself was so idiotic that I dont understand what made RGV make Phook-2. But this,I guess,is his signature. Among good horror movies,I liked Hostel. It was scary and I couldnt sleep for many nights after watching it.

If asked about Indian and English,I think I am yet to see a good horror film. I was appalled to see Krishna Cottage and Vastushashtra to fall in the category of horror. RGVs Darna Mana Hai was average and tolerable as horror film. I feel Japanese films out standard all films in that category. So far,I have liked Dark Waters, which actually scared me.

I liked Bhoot by RGV,however I dont like his other movies. Bhoot was set up in modern environment and had no lady with candle or forest scene. Therefore it appealed to modern masses as well. It was more realistic, however, only modern setting do not help in making a movie good. Phoonk is rated the worst on my scale, despite the fact that it shows a modern family and normal life being disturbed by evil power.

Raaz part one is the best Indian horror movie I have seen so far. Everything in that movie was balanced. Though it was scary,it did show how humans can overcome their fear and that was the best part of it. Another good movie that I saw was Bhoot, which was very natural. But Vastushashtra and Krishna Cottage are bad examples of horror movies. With their bad and redundant story lines and bad sound effects, audience lost interest in the first halves of the films.

I feel no Indian horror film can compete with international cinema in terms of story or technical details. However,Raaz did meet the expectations. While watching Vastushashtra,me and my friends had a good laugh and therefore we have decided to go for Phoonk-2,which I am sure will be more like a comic film.
