Nine-month-old Milind Dhaipule received a new lease of life at a time when his heart was failing
The cardiac surgical team at N M Wadia Institute of Cardiology on Sassoon road recently conducted a successful open heart procedure on nine-month-old Milind Dhaiphule. The baby’s parents are contract workers from Nagar and had brought Milind a month back to the hospital. The kid was diagnosed with complex congenital heart disease, with an obstruction to the veins returning oxygen rich blood from the lungs back to the heart. Normally 80 per cent of babies with this condition die within the first year. Because of the heart condition,Milind weighed just five kgs and would turn blue on crying.
The critical condition of the baby and the poor financial status of the parents resulted in the medical social workers and the doctors involved to resort to immediate and free surgery for the child. Dr Manoj Durairaj performed the complex procedure which involved the use of a heart lung machine and cooling of his body to 20 degree celsius. Once the vein connections to the heart were restored, the baby was warmed again and successfully taken off the machine.
The baby remained in ICU for a few days and was discharged from hospital within a week of surgery. Now,a month later, the baby has already gained one kg of weight and the parents are obviously relieved and happy. Dr Durairaj credits the success in pediatric cardiac surgeries not only to good surgical technique, but also to well-coordinated team work.
