Nearly 80 per cent of all trauma and orthopaedic problems are effectively addressed by the Ilizarov treatment, says Prof Vladimir Shevtsov, former director of the Russian Llizarov Scientific Centre,Kurgan,Russia. In Solapur to train surgeons in the technique during the 60th year of the inception of the treatment,Shevtsov said that Ilizarov is the most natural way of treating bone problems.
Shevtsov is visiting Solapur as course director of the National Llizarov Conference that started on Friday and will conclude on Sunday. This is the first such training programme backed by the Russian Consulate at Delhi, says Dr Sandeep Adke, who operates on patients using the Ilizarov technique and is organising the meeting at Solapur.
Shevtsov is one of the first disciples of the renowned orthopaedic surgeon academician G A Llizarov and has been teaching more than 6,000 national and foreign specialists about the technique.. He taught study and application of the Ilizarov methods in countries including USA,UK,Italy,Germany,Japan and South Korea. He is member of international societies and editorial boards and has received international medals and awards for his work.
Llizarov is a cost-effective orthopaedic technique but least practised due to lack of training and adequate knowledge of the technique,Shevtsov says. The technique is practised in 40 countries.
In this kind of surgery 1.5 mm diametre wires are passed across bones and connected externally to a steel ring frame. This is the only system where bones and joints can be manipulated after surgery from out side. It helps in correcting deformities and increasing length of bones.
