Rlys’ move to improve cleanliness and amenities on track

It has also removed unauthorised vendors on each of the six platforms and put up more benches for passengers

Till August 2013,the railway stations in city were teeming with unauthorised vendors and the tracks were stinking with human waste. But then things started to changed slowly much to the relief of passengers. The well-planned efforts of the railway administration has resulted into considerable improvement in the sanitary situation in last six months. The cleanliness quotient has not only improved at Pune Station and Shivajinagar Station but also at all the reservation centres in the city and in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

For years the railway station were identified with the unbearable stink from the uncleaned railway tracks. Tracks were covered with human faeces that remained uncleaned for days. The problem had peaked in summer this year when the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had cut the water supply to the stations. It all started with Suneet Sharma, the new DRM,pulling up private agencies incharge of sanitation work and giving them strict instructions that delay in cleaning work will not be tolerated. “Monitoring was stepped up to ensure that cleaing is carried out at regular intervals and sufficient sanitary staff report to work every day. Earlier, only half of the 60 workers required to work would remain present,” said an official.

Another important step taken to reduce the overcrowding and littering at the station was to remove the unatuhorised vendors. There were so many unauthorised vendors on each of the six platforms that it was difficult for the passengers, especially those with luggage,to move freely.

The administration also added more benches at each platform. Seating capacity of waiting rooms and retiring rooms were also

increased.

“DRM also ensured that the waiting rooms remain clean so that those who wanted to rest occupied them instead of sitting haphazardly on the platforms,” said another official.

Harsha Shah of Railway Pravasi Group said there was no denial that the cleanliness at the platforms and the railway tracks have improved over the last few months. But she added that the DRM should now focus on cleaning up the corruption in the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and commercial department as complaints against the officials of these two departments are piling up.

Another small but significant move taken up by the railway administration was to put signage at crucial points to help passengers. “For instance, frequently it would happen that passengers who wanted to go across the station would use the new Foot Over Bridge only to realise that it ends on the platform no. 6 and not on Wellesley Road. Several other signboards have been put up by the administration to help the passengers.
