Right on track

If you are a resident of Wanowrie, you’d be familiar with this place as the heart of this east Pune locality.

A jogging track in Wanowrie has spawned a slew of eateries – from roadside vendors to chic coffee bars

If you are a resident of Wanowrie, you’d be familiar with this place as the heart of this east Pune locality. Essentially a jogging track, this open space opposite Kedari Petrol Pump also doubles up as the preferred hangout for most residents. From roadside thelas to sit-down diner destinations,it’s where you can find the best the vicinity has to offer. While the stretch is packed with scores of health-conscious people, both in the morning and in the evenings,it’s after sundown that it really comes alive.

“I live in a society nearby and although I come here in the evenings mainly for a 40-minute-session of brisk walking, the various eateries here are also a definite lure,” says Neel Mahalingam,a 30-something fitness freak. Says Nikhat Fatima,a homemaker and a regular here,“The best part about the eateries around the jogging track is that you can choose from a range of options – right from the roadside thela selling momos,vada-pav,kutchi dabeli,to the higher-priced coffee bars and restaurants.” Fatima says the appeal of the area is enhanced by the easy availability of victuals suiting all budgets.

So,if you are in the mood for some Chinese or Oriental cuisine, you can either try out the delicately-flavoured fare at China Grill or settle for the lesser-priced but equally-delicious range of momos offered by Gurung’s Momos from his makeshift stall. Also, there’s a nice array of food outlets for those on the lookout for a quick bite and some coffee. “I prefer to settle for a nice, steaming cuppa at either the Coffee Jar or the recent addition Death by Caffeine,” says Isha Chopra,a perky teenager, having a great time with a group of friends at one of the eateries. “While we come here determined to take atleast six rounds of the track, most of the time,we end up just hanging out together,” adds Chopra, with a wink.

For those with a sweet tooth, there’s the choice of Natural’s Ice-cream and Amul’s ice-cream outlet and for others who crave for food rich in spices,Kareem’s is the place to head to. If you’re not in the mood to spend too much, then you can always settle for the roadside vendor selling steaming hot vada-pav,kutchi dabeli or corn-on-the-cob. And in all of this delicious consumption activity, the ‘jogging’ part of the jogging track may be relegated to the background; but,no one’s complaining….!
