Rib-tickler

The idea is funny and I get to watch all these whacky videos that people have made. It’s entertaining and crisp, and I like shows that rely on simple concepts.

Why did you agree to host Dekh Video Dekh?

The idea is funny and I get to watch all these whacky videos that people have made. It’s entertaining and crisp, and I like shows that rely on simple concepts. There is no confusion in the idea behind Color’s Dekh Video Dekh and that will appeal to the audience as well.

Isn’t the concept very similar to the popular American show,America’s Funniest Videos?

I can’t comment on this. This show has a very desi appeal to it as people make funny videos of incidents that happen around them.

Which is the funniest video you have watched so far while shooting for the show?

There is a video in which a groom falls off the horse as his baraat progresses and everyone is so busy dancing that they don’t even notice him. It’s hilarious and entertaining.

Your character ‘Sud’ on Radio Mirchi is famous. Yet,very few people know that you are the voice behind that hilarious character.

I feel that radio is a very different medium from TV and cinema. The fact that people don’t know it’s me playing Sud is good — I can leave it to the imagination of people.

Did you ever imagine Sud to become this popular?

Honestly,I did think that people would like Sud’s personality, but I never thought the show would be this big. It was just Delhi-centric in the beginning, but after its success, the concept’s travelled to other cities as well.

You have done radio, acted in TV shows, such as Kaun Banega Champu, and a few films, including Ghajini. How different is each medium?

Execution-wise,radio is easier, but cinema is definitely the best medium. TV is fun too — more people get to see you and,as an artiste, you get to do the antics that you can’t do on radio. But I don’t choose work according to the medium — it depends on what I find interesting and fun to do.

You have been typecast as the funny man. Would you like to experiment with other genres?

I studied theatre in Chandigarh, and I have done some serious and dark roles too,in plays such as Hamlet. So,I have experimented with genres.

Of all roles that you have played so far, which is your favourite?

I enjoyed my character in SAB TV’s Gutur Gu. It’s a silent comedy and even though I am not a part of it anymore,it’s the role I most cherish as it was very challenging.

What are the other projects that you are working on now?

Apart from Dekh Video Dekh,I am going to be taking part in Sony’s Comedy ka Mahamuqabala. I do have some film offers, but I just want to concentrate on the two shows for now.
