Rape case accused flees police custody, search on

As per officials of Hadapsar police station, the accused identified as Pritam Oswal, a resident of Uruli Devachi, was placed under arrest on August 31 on charges of rape and molestation.

An internal inquiry will also be conducted into the incident to probe possible dereliction of duty on the part of the on-duty personnel.

A 32-YEAR-OLD man arrested by Pune City police in a case of rape escaped from the custody on Monday evening when he was brought for investigation to Magarpatta Police Chowky.

As per officials of Hadapsar police station, the accused identified as Pritam Oswal, a resident of Uruli Devachi, was placed under arrest on August 31 on charges of rape and molestation.

He had been in police custody since then. “On Monday evening around 7.30 pm, the accused was brought to Magarpatta police chowky. He gave a jerk to the police constables deployed for his custody and fled the spot. He was chased, but managed to escape. A search was launched for him immediately after that. Multiple teams have been formed for the search,” said a senior officer from Pune City police.

The officer added, an internal inquiry will also be conducted into the incident to probe possible dereliction of duty on the part of the on-duty personnel.

Meanwhile, a separate offence was being registered against Oswal on the charges of resistance and obstruction to lawful apprehension under IPC Section 224, said officials.
