To raise their voice against the governments decision to allow 4 per cent construction on Pune hills, citizens and environmentalists organised a rally,Save Hills,Save Pune,on Saturday. As many as 300 people participated in the rally that started from the main gate of Fergusson College and ended at Sambhaji Park.
Activists like Satish Khot of the Green Pune Movement (GPM),politicians like Vandana Chavan, environmentalists Mohan Dharia,Madhav Gadgil and actor Amol Palekar participated.
Calling the rally a citizens movement,Khot said,This issue of construction on hills has been pending for more than 10 years. It is finally time that all sections of society take up the issue. We are way ahead in our thinking when compared to other cities. I am sure this movement will make a difference.
Pratap Rao,a resident of the Law College Road, said,We have been staying in Pune since 1962. Back then, the city did not even need fans. Now the climate has undergone a sea change. We have been seeing the change in hills over the years. It is very encouraging, however,to see youth waking up to such issues. There are many youth groups involved in planting trees on the hills. We need to stand together and raise this issue. Asking citizens not to vote for parties that do not support the bio-diversity park,Dharia said,There is a builders lobby pressing for 4 per cent construction. However, citizens should now raise their voice by making sure that they do not vote for parties that do not support BDP.
