As the monsoon starts to withdraw from the northern parts of the country, Pune and its surrounding regions are expected to receive good rains in the days to come. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted rain in Pune for the next few days. IMD has issued a red alert for Pune district which translates to high chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.

The monsoon withdrawal from Rajasthan and Gujarat is almost a week ahead of its normal date of withdrawal, as of Tuesday. The country as a whole has received 886.9 mm of rainfall as against the normal of 843.2 mm- an excess of 5 per cent. Most parts of the country have received good excess rainfall which has replenished the water reservoirs.

The present rains, the IMD said, was due to the presence of a cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal which has caused low pressure areas to be formed in various parts of West Central India and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Due to this system, heavy to very heavy (more than 120 mm) rainfall is expected in Western Maharashtra, Marathwada for the next 48 hours. Rain is expected to be accompanied by thunder and lighting mostly. A red alert has been issued for various parts of the state including Pune for the next 24 hours, with rainfall expected to subside after Thursday.

In line with the nature of monsoon withdrawal, rainfall is typically recorded in the evenings. Daytime temperatures soar, after which, the evenings witness intense spells of rainfall. Due to the intense spells of rainfall, water logging has been reported in various arterial roads causing traffic jams.

Monsoon has been exceptionally good with Pune district reporting 1,261.8 mm of rainfall as against the normal of 865 mm of rainfall it is supposed to receive. With all the dams more than full, Pune and Pimpri Chichwad’s water crisis is speculated to be solved for a year at least.
