A woman employed with an IT firm in Pune’s Viman Nagar allegedly died by suicide after her boyfriend purportedly refused to repay EMIs of the loans she had taken out for him. The deceased, identified as Rasika Ravindra Diwate, 25, a resident of BT Kavade Road, had also bought a pre-owned car for her boyfriend after he promised to repay the money.

Hadapsar police have arrested Adarsh Ajaykumar Menon, a resident of Z Corner, Manjari, after Rasika’s mother Chanda Diwate, who works as a private nurse, filed a complaint alleging abetment to suicide. Menon, who hails from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, has been booked under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, Rasika and Adarsh worked at the same company and were in a relationship since January this year. In April, she bought a pre-owned car for him and paid the down payment. Adarsh promised Rasika that he would repay the amount and also remit the EMIs for the remainder of the loan. Rasika had also taken out loans totalling Rs 3 lakh from her credit cards and handed over the money to Adarsh, besides another Rs 2.75 lakh in personal loans. She had also availed of additional loans through cellphone-based apps for Adarsh’s use.

As per the complaint, Adarsh did not pay the EMIs as promised. “She (Rasika) was stressed for the last few months. She told me that she was worried because Adarsh was not paying the EMIs for the loans that she had taken for him and hence she was forced to pay it. She also told me that because of this issue, there were frequent fights between the two. I had received a call from her on September 14 that the two had a fight over Adarsh’s refusal to pay the EMIs which were piling up,” Chanda said in the complaint.

On Friday, Chanda received a call from Rasika’s friend at 4 am and was informed that her daughter had attempted to die by suicide at Adarsh’s flat in Manjari and that they were rushing her to Noble Hospital, Hadapsar.

“When I reached there, I found that my daughter was dead. Adarsh was standing there, I went to him and asked him what had happened. He told me that they were fighting till 3 am after which Rasika told her that she was very angry and that she will sit in the hall. She went into another bedroom, locked it from the inside and (killed) herself between 3 am and 3.30 am. After discovering this, he called his friends and rushed her to the hospital,” Chanda said in the complaint.
