Pull out the warm layers for evening outings as meteorologists say Pune’s gulabi thand has arrived, and it’s here to stay. In less than a week, the city’s minimum temperature has dipped by over six degrees Celsius, from 21.9°C on November 3 to 14.3°C on November 9.

The chill is expected to persist through November, with night temperatures set to fall further. The drop will be particularly noticeable in the coming week.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune’s minimum temperature on Monday will be 14°C. NDA and Pashan which is among the greener pockets of the city will be cooler at 13°C, while Lohegaon, Chinchwad, Lavale, Magarpatta and Koregaon Park will record 17°C.

By next Saturday, the minimum temperature is expected to slide to 12°C. NDA and Pashan will touch 11°C, while Lohegaon, Chinchwad, Lavale, Magarpatta and Koregaon Park will see 15°C.

With no rain over the past few days, the sky is likely to remain clear through the next week. “A clear sky, which has no clouds, allows the long-wave radiation or the day-time heat absorbed by the Earth’s surface to escape at night. This causes a significant fall in night temperature,” says Anupam Kashyapi, former IMD head of weather forecasting.

Residents are also likely to feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Kashyapi explains, “We have the northerly winds, blowing via the Western Himalayan Region via Jammu-Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, into Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and the rest of Central India, via north Indian plains, bringing chill. With the moisture-less atmosphere and the wind factor, we can definitely say that it is time to welcome winter.”

Daytime temperatures, meanwhile, remain warm at around 30°C. By Saturday, Koregaon Park is likely to be the warmest at 32°C, while Pashan will see the coolest day temperature at 28°C.

The Mumbai Met office has forecast dry weather over Maharashtra and Goa till November 13, with no warnings issued for farmers.
