A first in Pune: Liver transplant on 50-year-old man without use of a single unit of blood

Minimising bleeding and reducing unnecessary transfusions helped our team to perform this landmark surgery, Dr Verma said.

IN A first, a 50-year-old man underwent liver transplant without requiring even a single unit of blood for transfusion at Ruby Hall on Sunday. This is also the 50th liver transplant from a cadaver donor in the city.

Liver transplantation is associated with massive blood loss and transfusion. However, over time, the transfusion requirements have reduced drastically and transfusion-free transplantation is fast becoming a reality.

In Pune, however, it is for the first time that a hospital has been able to achieve this feat, says Bomi Bhote, CEO of Ruby Hall Clinic. Dr Manish Verma, chief liver transplant surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic who performed the surgery told the Newsline, if there is less blood loss during surgery, then one does not require much transfusion of blood.

“Usually 10-15 blood units are required for a transplant and at Ruby Hall, so far, we have been performing liver transplants with a requirement of an average four to five units of blood,” he said, adding, This is the first time that a liver transplant has been performed without the requirement of a single unit of blood. The patient is a 50-year-old man whose biliary system had blocks at multiple places and several infections soon led to cirrhosis of the liver, said Dr Verma, adding, “We were informed of a cadaver donor on Saturday night and the transplant began at 11 pm and ended on Sunday at 6 am.”

Minimising bleeding and reducing unnecessary transfusions helped our team to perform this landmark surgery, Verma said.

According to Dr Aarti Gokhale, central coordinator of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), since the start of ZTCC Pune in 2004, there have been 131 kidney transplants and now the 50th liver transplant from a cadaver donor.
